Calling to St. Maarten
- To gain international (int’l) access from your country you will either have to dial 00, 001 or 011 first.
- To call Dutch St. Maarten: (dial int’l access) +1-721-xxx-xxxx
- From 09/30/2011 you can dial +1-721-xxx-xxxx to reach numbers in St. Maarten. From 09/30/2012 this will be mandatory. Remember: +1-721-xxx-xxxx.
- To call French St. Martin:
* landlines: (dial int’l access) + 590-590-xxx-xxx
* cell phones (dial int’l access) + 590-690-xxx-xxx - St. Maarten has a new exit code: 011
To call internationally from St. Maarten, you have to dial 011 first. 00 is still valid until further notice.
Electricity
- The Dutch side of St. Maarten has 110V electricity system. The electrical outlets are the same as the USA.
- The French side of St. Martin has the 220V European system with similar outlets. Converters or adapters for US electrical cords are required.
Entry Requirements
- When arriving on St. Maarten and going through Imigration you must have a valid passport and an applicable visa (if necessary). Click here for more information. To definitely find out if you need a visa to enter St. Maarten, please contact the nearest Dutch Embassy or Consulate.
- Note : Effective 12/31/2006, US citizens MUST have passports when returning to the USA from the Caribbean. Visit the US Department of State website for more info.
- All tourists must have a return ticket, or an onward ticket to a foreign destination, and must indicate a local address on their immigration forms. Make sure you have this!

- Customs : Please note that cash money in excess of NAF 20,000 must be declared with Customs. This equals about $11,000.

Pets
- If you intend to bring a pet to St. Maarten, you can. However, you must have a health certificate for your pet issued by a veterinarian. The certificate may not be older than six months. We do suggest that you contact your airline with regards to their policies concerning traveling with pets.

Residency Requirements
- Dutch citizens may stay up to six months on St. Maarten (or in the Netherlands Antilles) as a tourist. During that time they are not allowed to work! For Dutch citizens wishing to permanently move to St. Maarten (retirees) they must apply for a residency permit. This does not allow them to work.
- Other foreigners wishing to reside in St. Maarten must also have a residency permit. They must be able to demonstrate financial independency.

Timezone St. Maarten
- St. Maarten is in the Atlantic time zone which is 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-4). During the summer months this is the same as Eastern Daylight Savings Time. In the winter St. Maarten is 1 hour ahead of the U.S. East coast.
In relation to Western Europe, St. Maarten during the wintermonths is 5 hours behind. During European Daylight Savings Time that changes to 6.

Work Permits
- Any foreigner wishing to work on St. Maarten must be in possession of a work permit prior to arriving on the island. This must be arranged by the employer wishing to employ a foreigner.
